Introduction to IAM Fleet

The Institute of Advanced Motorists was initially established in 1956 as a non–profit making organisation dedicated to the ideal that:
“A higher standard of skill and proficiency on the part of the driver could help to reduce the number of road accidents.”
At the request of large fleet operators who recognised the need for specialised fleet driver training, the Institute in 1985 established its own subsidiary, IAM Fleet, the first organisation to offer this type of specialised training.
Although IAM Fleet is a profit making company, all profits are then re-invested into road safety via The Institute which is a Charity. This profit is then used to fund a number of Road Safety Initiatives throughout the UK, making the IAM the largest UK Road Safety Charity dedicated to raising driving standards and reducing the number of collisions that occur on the roads.

Today, IAM Fleet is a leader in its field and is promoting fleet risk management and driver training, not just because of its undoubted contribution to road safety, but also because it is now a commercially viable investment for companies.


Quality Accreditation

• IAM Fleet is accredited to BS EN ISO 9001:2000. IAM Fleet systems are monitored by the British Standards Institute

• IAM Fleet is a founder member of the Fleet Safety Association.

• IAM Fleet were voted ‘Best Driver Training Company’ in the 2000 & 2006 VFM Green Fleet Industry Awards

• IAM Fleet have been nominated, every year since its inception, for the Fleet News ‘Best Driver Training Company’ winning the award twice

• As an ISO quality assured company our trainers are subject to our own regular supervisory check tests

Administration


• IAM Fleet has offices in London, and a full team of National Business Managers and administrators who ensure individual attention at all times

• IAM Fleet has always operated ‘in house’ administration systems

• All course administration is fully computerised, course and driver reports are stored electronically to facilitate provision of training statistics as required.

• Bookings can be accepted via post, fax, telephone or email.

• IAM Fleet’s ISO 9001 accreditation encompasses ‘the design and provision of specialist training and education in advanced driving techniques for companies and other organisations’

• IAM Fleet regularly holds review meetings with clients. The agenda includes the quality of administration, accounting and organisation. In addition to the Project Manager, IAM Fleet will delegate responsibility for the IOPDC account to a member of the administration team.


Trainers


• National Training Manager, Lloyd Brown manages a nationwide trainer network that can be deployed worldwide.

• IAM Fleet has 140 highly qualified trainers throughout the UK

• All trainers hold as a minimum requirement The Department of Transport Fleet Approved Driving Instructor certificate (ADI).

• Many trainers also hold Police Class 1 driving certificates, are former Police Driving Instructors, former Home Office Driving Instructors, DSA Driving Examiners or other relevant qualifications.

• All potential trainers are subjected to a vigorous selection and training process.

• Trainers are available for specialist driving activities e.g. security vehicles, chauffeuring, ambulance etc.


Relevant Legislation

• Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 - The Act sets out the general duties which employers have towards employees and members of the public. What the law requires here, is what good management and common sense would lead employers to do anyway: that is to look at what the risks are and take sensible measures to tackle them.
• The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 - The Management Regulations generally make more explicit what employers are required to do to manage health and Safety under the Health and Safety at Work Act. Like the Act, they apply to EVERY work activity.
They require employers to carry out risk assessments, make arrangements to implement necessary measures, appoint competent people and arrange for appropriate information and training.

The Health & Safety Executive

The HSE “Driving at Work” document main points are that companies have a duty of care for anyone who drives on behalf of their employer – regardless of it being a company, pool or a private vehicle.
